Lahinch Swim Club

Lahinch Swim Club was reformed in 2007 after a 2 year break. A group of parents came together and formed a committee to re-establish the club and its links with Seaworld Lahinch. The present committee was voted in at the AGM in September 2016 and have been running the club successfully since then.

We have a current membership of around 140 children ranging in age from 7 to 19 years old. We have 3 squads A, B & C depending on the swimmers level. The A squad have 7 sessions available to them, the B squad swim three evenings a week Tuesdays, Thursdays 5pm - 6pm and Fridays from 6pm - 7pm, and the C squad swim on a Friday evening 5pm - 6pm. Our season runs from September to Christmas for term one and January to May for term two. We run June as an optional extra. The entry level is Swim Level 4 or 5 - the child should be confident and able to swim a length.

Our A squad head coach is Mr Eddie Walshe who works out the training programme for the children, our B squad head coach is Ms Anita Cullen and we have 3 assistant coaches who also attend most sessions. The pool is divided into six lanes and each lane is of a certain level so no child is swimming with someone at a higher level.

The starter lanes are given stroke work and training to perfect their technique and when they have acquired the necessary skills they are moved up to the next lane and eventually to the next squad. Here they will do some stroke work but much more fitness and stamina work. From there they move up again and will learn the techniques and skills they need to compete in galas. They build up their fitness and stamina even further by doing a range of training techniques. Details are available from our coach Eddie Walshe on request.

The club competes in various galas throughout the season. The invitation and grade C galas are open to any of the children who want compete and as they achieve their times they can move up to the grade B then grade A galas. There is no obligation to attend galas it is up to the children to decide if that is something they would like to do, but we do highly recommend that they do at least 3 during the swimming year. This cements what they have learned during training and also gives the children a brilliant base line to show them their progress as they get more skilled at swimming and improve their fitness.
